Haiku 7th B-Day has rolled around and here's a video demonstration showing some of the many ways Haiku can be used, including showing off Firefox's support of modern social networking sites such as Facebook and Plurk.

This video was also intially intended to air at Haiku Down Under 2008, the Australian Haiku Users and Developers Conference.

Zenja gives us a Sneak Peak !

Zenja Solaja wrote on the Haiku mailing list recently that he had spent "a few weeks optimising my 3D rendering engine (went from 320 fps to 1200 with accelerated hardware on another OS). I was pleasantly suprised to see Haiku run the game at 30 fps (OpenGL 2.1 via Mesa 7.0, with shader support). This is actually playable under Haiku."

Nice work and look out for a nice Christmas (ETA) present this year.

NetLock Monitor 2.0

Oakbits have released the latest version of their NetLock Monitor, an application that lets you control which apps can't access the net.

Unfortunately, it's Zeta only, but for Zeta users, it's good stuff.

REminiscence (aka Flashback) Released !

Back in 1992, Delphine software wrote some of the coolest games for the Amiga, and one of the Flashback, is now available for the BeOS platform.

Now, we just need Another World to be ported and I'll be in Amiga-Game-Heaven.

And what better way to spent Christmas, than with a new version of Jukebox by J M Reis. This update contains a ton of updates and is definitely one of my fav media apps on BeOS/Haiku.

OzHUG Haiku Distro

I thought I'd kick off discussions of the OzHUG distribution of Haiku, which we will be hosted and supported by ourselves.

The name of our distro is yet to be decided, but at present it is going by the moniker, Haiku - OzHUG Edition.

The main goals of our distribution are:-
* to be English (Australia) Language-based distro
* to include apps that compliment and enhance the User Experience but not so much as to cause "bloat"

All decisions will be via private member polls and online polls. The online polls will have less weighting but this is still your chance to have a say.

Haiku Tech Talk at Google

According to the Haiku site, the guys have reported that the event was a success.

"Yesterday was our big day at Google, and we can say with a good degree of confidence that the Haiku Tech Talk was quite successful. We had a very special guest for this event: former Be Inc. CEO Jean Louis Gassée, not only joined us at Google for our presentation, but also gave a few words of support and encouragement for our project."

Happy Birthday Haiku

The Haiku OS project turns 5 today. Back in August 2001, Michael Phipps "founded" the open source replacement for BeOS, called OpenBeOS, on the mailing list.

In 2004, the name was changed, in order to avoid infringing on Palm's trademarks (now owners of BeOS). The new name was influenced by an official community vote and was then revealed at WalterCon, the US-based Haiku annual conference.

Five years on and Haiku now boots on real hardware to an accelerated desktop. It can run many R5 applications, has a network stack in post-alpha (soon to be beta), and can performed tasks via USB that R5 could only dream of. It's stability increases week by week and should be capable of replacing R5 and going beyond in the not too distant future.

HaikuFox Theme 0.3.8b

tigerdog is back with his latest version of HaikuFox Theme 0.3.8b - which added support for the tab-close button on tab per bug 308396, a Fix for the problem with the right edge of the 1st tab, when not selected. Also a silent update on 2006-02-17 which fixed the bug in 0.3.8, which was caused by removal of mail button.

HaikuFox Theme Updated

Tigerdog has updated his HaikuFox Theme to version 0.36.

This update fixes scrollbar bugs in downloads and extensions panels, cleans up a few scattered icons, reduced theme file size and adds scrollbars when HaikuFox is used under Mac OS X.

Awesome stuff. I use HaikuFox on my all my OSes including my Mac ;)

New Version of VideoEditor Released (ZETA)

yellowTAB mid October announced that they were to bundle the pro version of their VideoEditor as part of their ZETA DeluxeEdition. Today they announced that a new version of the VideoEditor had been made available for download for customers of ZETA R1.0 and R1.1.

RDesktop 1.4.1

3dEyes** brings us his latest edition of RDesktop 1.4.1. RDesktop is an open source client for Windows NT Terminal Server and Windows 2000/2003 Terminal Services, capable of natively speaking Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) in order to present the user's NT desktop. RDesktop was initially written by Matthew Chapman based on various scarce documentation, wire sniffs, and trial-and-error.

HaikuFox Theme Updated

The very cool, HaikuFox Theme by tigerdog, has been updated to version 0.35. The fix was for a minor problem with the "insertion arrow" when rearranging tabs using drag'n'drop under BeOS / Zeta.

Click here to install this awesome theme. I must say, I've installed it on all my machines at work and at home and it looks great on the Mac as well as on BeOS.

Beezer makes Archiving a Breeze

If you get a chance, check out this new app by Ramshankar called Beezer - it's a freeware GUI-based Archiver that currently supports the following formats:- zip, tar, gzip, tar.gzip, bzip2, tar.bzip2, lha (lzh), rar, 7zip and arj.

More formats, as they become available, can simply be "plugged" into the application.

Haiku's First Employee

Axel Dörfler has been announced as Haiku's first full-time employee.

Thanks to user donations, Haiku, Inc. has been able to raise enough money to pay Axel through to the end of November, as a full-time, 40-hour week employee.

"Donn Cave has updated his port of Python to BeOS, as well as the Bethon BeOS API interface library.

This brings BeOS up to date with other platforms with regards to Python, and merges some independent patchsets into Bethon."

VNC Server for BeOS

Now that we've got our NYEs and NYDs out of our system for another year, Alexander G. M. Smith has published his VNCServer port of RealVNC's version 4.0 final source code.

Whilst he recommends that you use RealVNC as a client, I'm a fan of TightVNC. It just has more features than Real.

Bolitaire

Published by yzonesoft, Haiku/BeOS users now have a Solitaire/Freecell clone called Bolitaire. It was originally created for DOS and was then ported to Linux, BeOS and Windows.

It includes support for controlled animation, no cheat statistics table, MS deal and Alrand deal and Windows GUI.

Nice new BeOS magazine!

Well, it looks nice. It's about Zeta, and it's in German, but it's still a good thing to see. It's at www.zemag.de the first one is on-line now. The introductory paragraph, translated quickly, says:

"Zemag is a new print magazine dealing with hardware and software issues for the Zeta operating system. While the focus is mainly on Zeta and its development, there will be many other interesting topics discussed, e.g. software development for Zeta with practical examples for developers; software tests; tips and tricks for users; interviews and news items."

New gcc for BeOS

Oliver Tappe has published the latest version of gcc for BeOS/Haiku - version 2.95.3-beos-041111.

This is a package of gcc-2.95.3 and binutils-2.15 and is based on the work done by Takashi Toyoshima, which in turn is based on the official gnupro-releases done by Fred Fish and others at Be.
